Rocky Point Ecology Tour January 19 - 22, 2009 $675 per person double, $875 per person single
Travel on this Eco-workshop to Puerto Penasco, Mexico. This town is on the Sea of Cortez and has beautiful sandy beaches, gorgeous sunsets, great seafood and Sonoran Style Mexican Cuisine. We will explore the ecologically and geology of two natural landmarks, on the excursions to the Pinacate Volcano and the Gran Desierto. The staff of CEDO - the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans, will conduct the ecology potions of this tour. This historic and intriguing area offers diverse topography, spectacular vistas, and a multitude of plant and wildlife species. In addition, we will be staying at the Playa Bonita Hotel, right on the beach. This is a great hotel to relax and go for walks on the beautiful sandy beach. This workshop includes transportation, three breakfasts, three lunches, one dinner, lodging, gratuities, attractions listed in the itinerary and a $50 per person donation to the Desert Botanical Gardens. |

Jan. 19th - Depart from Desert Botanical Gardens at 9:00 am, you should be there at least fifteen minutes prior, so we can leave on time. Traveling south, we will have a rest stop in Gila Bend. Next we will travel to the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge visitor center, and walk along the short interpretive trail, which offers an introduction to the ecology of the Sonoran desert; with an included bag lunch. Arriving in town late in the afternoon we will then check into the Playa Bonita Hotel for three nights. This evening we will enjoy an included Mexican fiesta dinner with live entertainment. Jan. 20th - After an included breakfast, we will venture into the heart of the Pinacate Volcanic range to learn about the geologic processes involved in the formation of this basin and range, the craters and diversity of life that surrounds them – a full day tour. You will also have plenty of time to explore and have a question & answer session with the staff from C.E.D.O. You will have the evening free to relax or explore on your own. Jan. 21st - After an included breakfast, we will take a hiking tour of the spectacular Gran Desierto “Sea of Dunes” with expert guides. Visit North America's only true sand sea to learn about dune geography and the unique adaptations of its inhabitants, as well as why, when and how. This 5-hour trip involves two hours of walking to and from the dunes and includes a bag lunch. You will have the rest of the day free to relax or explore on your own. Jan. 22nd - This morning, enjoy the included breakfast and free time to explore or relax. We will then have lunch on your own down on the Malecón before leaving for Phoenix. We should arrive back at the Desert Botanical Gardens around 7 pm.
