A Unique Cultural Experience Awaits with an All Inclusive Mata Ortiz Tour Package

An ancient pottery tradition from the great Paquime Culture has been reborn, springing forth from the area that was their major trading center in northern Chihuahua, Mexico.  New life has taken shape in the old trading center which had routes reaching south to Mexico City and north to the Pueblos of the American Southwest.

In the early 1970’s Juan Quezada, a self taught, incredibly talented potter began experimenting, trying to replicate the ancient art form on the pots of the Paquime culture (11-13 century).  In Mata Ortiz, old clay sources were rediscovered and mineral based pigments were reinvented.  New artistic hands utilize the pinch and coil method to create their pots.  No pottery wheels, nor commercial clay or paints are employed, giving each pot a distinctive style and historic motif of its own.  Visit this new generation of artisans in their homes and have the opportunity to purchase their creations.
